What is a Transfer Case?

If the promise of taking your four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle out for an off-road adventure helps get you through the work week, then your top priority should be keeping up with its routine maintenance.

The gears that are housed in the transfer case enable you to switch from two-wheel to 4WD. When they’re engaged, they provide the needed action for the front and rear driveshafts to change the rotational speed of each wheel. The wheels are synchronized, so they’re moving at the same rate. When accomplished, your 4WD has the traction it needs to make it through that rugged terrain.

If you’ve had trouble getting the 4WD lever to stay in gear, or you hear gears grinding, it’s most likely time to have the transfer case serviced. The seals could have cracked and caused oil to leak out. Stop in to our service department at Laurel Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram today. One of our experienced staff will be able to assist you and answer your questions.
